Greek villages - Gökçeada
Heading west from Gökçeada town, you'll pass Zeytinli (Aya theodoros) after 3km, Tepeköy (Agridia), another 7km on, and Dereköy (Shinudy), another 5 km west.
All were built on hillsides overlooking the island's central valley to avoid pirate raids.
Many of the houses are deserted and falling into disrepair, particulary at Dereköy, which is reminiscent of the Mediterranean ghost town of Kayaköy. However, thanks to a couple of inspired accommodation options, Zeytinli and Tepeköy are discovering the benefits of small-scale tourism and both are worth a visit.
Tepeköy is absolutely gorgeous, surrounded by green-grey scree-covered hills, with views over valleys and alarge reservoir, plus a dash of Greek heritage in its main square and taverna.
Its Greek church is also picturesque; apparently this is the only setlement in Turkey that does not have a mosque.
